Empty it
Including the shelf you added, the rubbish, and the key. The driver is not a removalist for your contents. The container should be as ready to lift as it was to place.
Collection day for a shipping container is the delivery in reverse: an empty box, a clear path, and a truck that can leave. If the gate has changed since the container arrived, the old plan is not a plan.

Including the shelf you added, the rubbish, and the key. The driver is not a removalist for your contents. The container should be as ready to lift as it was to place.
Cars, bins, a new fence and a scaffold all count. The method that placed the container needs the room it needed then, unless the quote for collection says otherwise.
Someone who can open the gate, point, and stay off the truck’s path. A code left in a text the week before is not that person.
Builds grow fences. Gardens grow hedges. Mud arrives. The entrance that worked on delivery day can be gone. Walk it a week before collection and compare it with the photos you sent the first time. If it has changed, ring 1300 789 543 before the truck is committed. Hire always had this ending. The ending needs a gate.
Tell us if the date must move. A hire that runs long because nobody called is how a temporary container becomes an argument. Call when you know, not on the morning. The quote should already have said how the ending works. If it was silent, you are reading a hole. Send it back while it is still a draft, not when the truck is in the street.
Seasonal roads matter on the way out as much as on the way in. A container placed in the dry at Katherine or Kununurra may need to leave before the wet. Write that when you hire, not as a surprise. A return from Tasmania may involve a sea leg, depending on where the unit is supplied from; the quote will say.
If you added a lock box, a shelf or a vent, say what must be undone and what was agreed to stay. Modifications on a hired shell were only ever the scope in the quote. Do not leave a welded surprise for the driver. Put the key in the hand of the person on site, not under the container.
The container is empty, swept enough that loose rubbish is not falling out, and the doors close. The approach matches the method. The site contact is there. The paperwork in your email matches the day. That is the whole event. It should be dull.
If the ground is wetter than the day you booked, say so that morning. Methods depend on bearing. Wait for a drier day if that was the condition you already described. Truck choice was conditional. Collection inherits the condition.
Photograph the empty container if you want a record that it left empty. That is for you and, if you need it, for an insurer. Insurance is still their document. Photos help. They are not a policy.
A purchase is not collected. If you are selling or moving a container you own, that is a different request. Say so at the start. Do not use hire collection language for a box you bought and now want shifted full. A full move is a different weight and a different risk. Delivery of an empty container and shifting a loaded one were never the same job.
A fit-out hire is ending. The shipping container was placed in a lane that has since gained a scaffold and a skip. The original photos are fiction. The hirer walks the lane on Monday, rings 1300 789 543 on Monday, and does not wait until the truck is booked for Thursday. They send a new photo. They say the skip can move on Wednesday morning and not before.
They empty the container on Tuesday, including the padlock key, which goes in their pocket. The shelf that was quoted as removable is off. A bracket they had welded without asking is the problem they declare, not the problem they hide. The quote for collection either includes making that right or it tells them the collection waits. They would rather the second than a roadside argument.
The site contact is the site manager, not the owner who is in another city. The manager knows the skip. The owner knows the invoice. Both facts are in the email, with the right person named for the gate. How ordering works still applies at the end: the person at the gate is the person who can point.
They ask the collection note to list the obstacles in one line: skip moves Wednesday, scaffold stays, truck uses the left lane. If the note says “collect from site” and nothing else, they send it back. Vague collection is how a driver meets a skip.
Thursday works because Monday was honest. The container leaves empty. The lane returns to the scaffold alone. Collection day for a shipping container is a small, dull success when the gate you have is the gate you declared. It is a mess when the gate you remember is the one from delivery day and the street has moved on.
A week before collection, walk the path with the original photos in your hand. Anything new — a skip, a scaffold, a fence, a hedge, a softer entrance — is a reason to ring 1300 789 543 while there is still time to change the day or the method. A shipping container hire ends at the gate you have now, not the gate you remember. Send the new photo in the same call. Do not rely on the driver to improvise against a surprise.
Empty means empty of goods, rubbish and hardware that was not agreed to stay. Keys are in a person’s pocket, not under the box. If you welded something that was not in the quote, say so before the truck is booked. The collection note should name the obstacles in one line. “Collect from site” is not a line. Ask for the obstacles to be named.
Seasonal exits still matter on the way out. If the wet is coming, or a seasonal road will close, the ending needs the same honesty as the delivery, and the month you can leave should be written when you hire. The site contact is the person who can move the skip, not the person who only knows the invoice. Name them. Dull collection days are the successful ones. Aim at dull.
Ring before the truck is arranged and say what the new date depends on. A date that slips in silence is how a hire becomes a dispute. The quote should already have told you how a change works.
Empty it of your goods, rubbish and fixings that were not agreed to stay. A light sweep so debris does not fall out of the doors is enough. It does not need to look new. It needs to be empty.
Tell us as soon as you know. Collection uses a real approach. A container that cannot leave is not a completed hire. Send a current photo, not the original one.
Empty the shipping container, clear the path, put a person at the gate, and tell us if the site changed. Collection day is delivery run backwards, with less romance and the same need for a true photo.
Hire terms live on hire. A seasonal exit is on the Northern Territory note. Reading the collection line is still reading the quote.
